Re “Meeting its mission? Criticism of San Diego Humane Society piles up in wake of grand jury report, proposed budget cut” (June 1): I have been a volunteer for the San Diego Humane Society for many years — cleaning kennels, fostering kittens, socializing cats and greeting the public to share with them the Humane Society’s programs and services.

My experiences, and the experiences I have seen with other volunteers, does not match the impressions given in the article about the Humane Society. Rather than not being allowed to volunteer in ways I find fulfilling, I have been able to pilot new volunteer roles that were then opened up to other volunteers and expanded the Humane Society’s services. My experience has been to watch Humane Society staff and volunteers care for, and protect, all the animals who are entrusted to us, and to see the joy in peoples’ faces when they find their new animal family member.
