Pitching matchups

Monday

  • Padres RHP Michael King (1-0, 3.52 ERA)   |   He’s coming off an 11-strikeout performance in which he scattered two hits, a walk and a hit batter over five shutout innings in beating the Guardians. King struck out 12 over five innings of two-run ball in a start last year against the Athletics, his only start so far against the A’s.
  • Athletics RHP Luis Severino (0-1, 3.75 ERA)   |   The former Met has walked seven through 12 innings to start his stay in Sacramento. The 31-year-old Severino has two career starts against the Padres, allowing an earned run in 6⅔ innings in 2023 and one earned run in five innings last year. He has struck out 10 against seven walks across those two starts.

Tuesday

  • Padres RHP Dylan Cease (1-0, 3.38 ERA)   |   He has a 14-to-3 strikeout-to-walk ratio through 10⅔ innings to start the season. Cease has a 4.28 ERA in six career starts against the A’s (4.28 ERA), but he struck out eight over six innings of one-run ball in a win last year in San Diego.
  • Athletics LHP Jeffrey Springs (1-1, 4.00 ERA)   |   Including seven starts last year to end the season, Springs has a 3.43 ERA in 42 innings since returning from Tommy John surgery. The former Ray had a 2.46 ERA over 135⅓ innings in 2022. His only action against the Padres was allowing five runs in 2 ⅔ innings out of the bullpen in 2018.

Wednesday

  • Padres RHP Randy Vásquez (0-1, 1.69 ERA)   |   With nine walks against five strikeouts through 10⅔ innings, Vásquez’s FIP (4.53) is well ahead above his ERA.
