San Diego Padres (8-2, 3rd in NL West)
- The Padres dropped their first series of the season, so despite their 7-0 start to the season they head to Sacramento a half-game behind the Giants and the Dodgers in the tough NL West. The Padres swept their series against the Athletics last season in San Diego.
Sacramento Athletics (4-6, 4th in AL West)
- The A’s are four games behind the Rangers and still looking for their first win at Sutter Health Park, the Triple-A ballpark that will serve as their home until they their Las Vegas ballpark is ready. The Cubs outscored the A’s 35-9 in a three-game sweep in Sacramento last week. The A’s are coming off winning two of three over the weekend in Colorado.

- Padres RHP Michael King (1-0, 3.52 ERA) | He’s coming off an 11-strikeout performance in which he scattered two hits, a walk and a hit batter over five shutout innings in beating the Guardians. King struck out 12 over five innings of two-run ball in a start last year against the Athletics, his only start so far against the A’s.
- Athletics RHP Luis Severino (0-1, 3.75 ERA) | The former Met has walked seven through 12 innings to start his stay in Sacramento. The 31-year-old Severino has two career starts against the Padres, allowing an earned run in 6⅔ innings in 2023 and one earned run in five innings last year. He has struck out 10 against seven walks across those two starts.

- Padres RHP Dylan Cease (1-0, 3.38 ERA) | He has a 14-to-3 strikeout-to-walk ratio through 10⅔ innings to start the season. Cease has a 4.28 ERA in six career starts against the A’s (4.28 ERA), but he struck out eight over six innings of one-run ball in a win last year in San Diego.
- Athletics LHP Jeffrey Springs (1-1, 4.00 ERA) | Including seven starts last year to end the season, Springs has a 3.43 ERA in 42 innings since returning from Tommy John surgery. The former Ray had a 2.46 ERA over 135⅓ innings in 2022. His only action against the Padres was allowing five runs in 2 ⅔ innings out of the bullpen in 2018.

- Padres RHP Randy Vásquez (0-1, 1.69 ERA) | With nine walks against five strikeouts through 10⅔ innings, Vásquez’s FIP (4.53) is well ahead above his ERA. Vásquez has struck out just 4.2 per nine innings this season. He struck out five over five innings of one-run ball in a no-decision last year against the Athletics.
- Athletics RHP Osvaldo Bido (1-0, 2.70 ERA) | He’s gone five innings in each of his first two starts, both victories for Sacramento. Righties have a .962 OPS this year against Bido, compared to lefties’ .478 OPS. This is Bido’s first appearance against the Padres.

- San Diego: RHP Joe Musgrove is expected to play catch on Monday in Sacramento, his first session since last October’s Tommy John surgery. Musgrove is a longshot to return to even just the bullpen in the playoffs this season. The pitching staff is also currently without RHPs Yu Darvish (elbow), Matt Waldron (oblique), Bryan Hoeing (shoulder), Sean Reynolds (foot) and Jhony Brito (forearm).
- Sacramento: 2B Zack Gelof is out through at least May after surgery to repair a fractured right hamate. The pitching staff is without LHPs Ken Waldichuk (Tommy John) and LHP Brady Brusso (shoulder) and RHPs Luis Medina (Tommy John) and Michael Otanez (shoulder).
