Leo De Vries is starting Year 2 on a good note.

The 18-year-old shortstop went 2-for-4 with two runs scored on Friday, helping to set the tone in high Single-A Fort Wayne’s 5-0 win over visiting Lansing in its opener.

Both of De Vries’ hits were singles, including one to lead off the game for the TinCaps. De Vries promptly stole second base and scored on a double from USD’s Jack Costello, who finished with two RBIs on two hits.

Second baseman Brandon Butterworth’s double was Fort Wayne’s only other extra-base hit.

Five pitchers combined for five hits allowed over nine shutout innings, led by right-hander Enmanuel Pinales striking out four and scattering two hits and three walks over 3⅔ innings.

Lefthander Harry Gustin struck out two over two scoreless innings.
