San Diego FC will officially enter the sports world at 4 p.m. Sunday, when the club takes the field in Carson for its inaugural match against the LA Galaxy. The newborns will be dressed in blue — the team calls it azul — and eager to make an impact in Major League Soccer during a match that will be broadcast on Apple TV and both English and Spanish radio.
Regardless of the outcome, it’s a Sunday worth celebrating.
San Diego has lost so much over the past decade — the Chargers left for Los Angeles, a pandemic wiped out a historic SDSU basketball season and Padres owner Peter Seidler died too soon, to name a few — that the addition of another major professional sports franchise seems more significant.
San Diego FC’s arrival is a rebirth for local sports fans eager to stand, stomp, sing, cheer and — to borrow a saying from another sport — root for the home team, regardless of where they’re playing.
